Researchers have found that fear suppression in the brain occurs through the interaction of two key regions: the ventral lateral geniculate nucleus and specific areas of the cortex. These structures activate in critical moments and play a crucial role in learning to control instinctive “fight-or-freeze” responses. This discovery could lead to new treatments for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and anxiety disorders.

In experiments on mice, neuroscientists observed that activating these brain regions enabled the animals to overcome fear associated with the simulation of an approaching predator. However, when the ventral lateral geniculate nucleus was deactivated, even trained mice reverted to displaying fear responses. Additionally, the suppression of endocannabinoids hindered the animals’ ability to manage anxiety, highlighting the critical role these compounds play in the process.

Scientists are now exploring the potential of deep brain stimulation and enhancing endocannabinoid activity as possible treatments for anxiety disorders and PTSD. However, further research is needed to assess the safety and effectiveness of these approaches before they can be introduced into clinical practice.
