Westinghouse Electric Company has partnered with Google Cloud to harness artificial intelligence in accelerating the design and construction of nuclear reactors. The collaboration integrates key AI tools from Google — including Vertex AI, Gemini, and BigQuery — with Westinghouse’s proprietary platforms, such as the HiVE system and the Bertha language model.
Vertex AI is used to develop and deploy machine learning models, Gemini provides generative AI capabilities, and BigQuery serves as a cloud-based data warehouse for large-scale analytics. Together, these technologies enable the rapid processing of vast amounts of engineering data, streamlining reactor design and automating the development of modular nuclear systems.
HiVE is a specialized generative AI trained on 70 years of engineering data from the nuclear industry. It assists in technical decision-making and document analysis. The Bertha model manages the full lifecycle of reactors — from maintenance planning to inspection operations.
This fusion of AI and engineering holds the potential to drastically reduce timelines and improve the efficiency of building new nuclear facilities — a critical step in meeting the demands of the global energy transition.
