Astronomers Discover Hundreds of Embryonic Supermassive Black Holes SPACE

Astronomers have discovered over 300 potential precursors of supermassive black holes in dwarf galaxies, which could significantly alter our understanding of how such objects form. These black holes might be the forerunners of the supermassive black holes found at the centers of large galaxies. The discovery has tripled the number of known such objects, providing a unique opportunity for further study of their formation.

The research was conducted using the DESI instrument, which collected data on 115,000 dwarf galaxies over the course of a year. Scientists were looking for objects where black holes began emitting powerful streams of matter, and found that some of these objects appear not only in small galaxies but also in larger ones.

This discovery challenges current ideas about the locations of intermediate-sized black holes and opens up new avenues for research. Scientists will continue their observations to better understand how these black hole embryos could be connected to the formation of supermassive black holes in the universe.
