Researchers from Sweden and the U.S. have developed an innovative blood test capable of detecting Alzheimer’s disease and accurately determining its stage. Unlike expensive and invasive methods such as PET scans or spinal fluid analysis, the new test detects a specific form of tau protein — MTBR-tau243. Its level in the blood is directly correlated with tau buildup in the brain, making early and accessible diagnosis possible.

During clinical studies, the test demonstrated up to 92% accuracy in identifying Alzheimer’s and distinguishing it from other cognitive disorders. This breakthrough could significantly simplify diagnosis and disease monitoring, making testing feasible in standard clinics. It paves the way for personalized medicine — allowing treatment to be tailored to each patient’s specific disease stage.

The blood test also helps doctors choose the most appropriate therapy: anti-amyloid treatment may be effective in early stages, while later stages may benefit more from therapies targeting tau tangles. Additionally, the test reduces the risk of misdiagnosis, giving patients access to more targeted and effective treatment.

Despite the promising results, researchers emphasize the need for further clinical trials. To fully validate the test, scientists must evaluate its effectiveness across broader and more diverse patient populations and monitor their progress over extended periods.
