Scientists have developed a new targeted senolytic drug that selectively destroys aging liver cells, reducing the risk of severe diseases such as fibrosis, cirrhosis, and cancer. These “zombie cells” accumulate in the liver due to metabolic disorders, contributing to the progression of fatty liver disease and other conditions. The new drug targets BCL-xl and BCL-2 proteins, which help these cells evade death.

Research results show that targeting these proteins leads to the destruction of zombie cells, reduces fat accumulation in the liver, and prevents fibrosis. This senolytic has proven to be the most effective and safest among existing counterparts, opening new prospects for preventing and treating age-related and metabolic liver diseases.

According to one of the study’s authors, Daohong Zhou, this discovery paves the way for developing even more selective and less toxic drugs to combat liver diseases. In the near future, researchers will focus on further optimizing the drug to make it a reliable method for preventing severe complications.

At the same time, scientists continue to study fatty liver disease. Recent research has identified two types: one that damages only liver tissue and another that causes systemic complications affecting the entire body.
