On March 2, 2025, the privately developed Blue Ghost lunar lander, built by Firefly Aerospace, successfully touched down on the Moon. This marks the first private spacecraft to achieve a soft landing without any issues. The landing took place in the Mare Crisium region, on the slopes of an ancient volcanic dome. Just 30 minutes after touchdown, the lander beamed back its first images, including a “selfie” against the lunar landscape and a snapshot of Earth.
The mission was carried out under NASA’s Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) program, which aims to bolster private space companies. NASA provided $101 million to deliver ten scientific experiments to the lunar surface and an additional $44 million for equipment development. Among Blue Ghost’s tools are a drill to measure soil temperature, a device to analyze lunar dust, and a dust-shielding system designed for future missions.
The success of Blue Ghost ushers in a new era of lunar exploration, with private companies taking center stage. In the coming days, Intuitive Machines is expected to land near the Moon’s south pole, while Japan’s ispace will attempt a fresh landing three months from now, following a failed effort in 2023. NASA plans to send two private missions to the Moon each year, speeding up lunar research and cutting the costs of space exploration.
