A new study based on quantum mechanics suggests that our classical reality could be the result of the existence of a multiverse. Scientists from the Autonomous University of Barcelona, using the concept of “decoherent histories” and the many-worlds interpretation, showed that increased energy levels in quantum systems suppress alternative possibilities, leaving only one outcome. This explains how the familiar classical reality arises from the quantum world.

The thought experiment with Schrödinger’s cat illustrates how quantum states can exist in superposition until an observation occurs. However, the study shows that in large systems consisting of thousands of particles, quantum effects rapidly fade, and the system transitions to a classical state. This happens due to decoherence — the process by which quantum entanglement is disrupted by the surrounding environment.

The researchers modeled the quantum evolution of systems with up to 50,000 energy levels and found that classical reality almost inevitably arises. This confirms that our perception of the world as classical is the result of large-scale quantum processes. However, questions remain, such as whether universes could behave differently, leaving room for alternative realities.

Thus, the study offers a new understanding of how the quantum world generates classical reality but also reminds us that quantum mechanics continues to challenge our perception of “reality.”
