Chinese tech giant Tencent has introduced the AI model Hunyuan Turbo S, boasting higher processing speed and lower operational costs compared to DeepSeek R1. Unlike its competitor, Turbo S delivers instant query processing, making its integration into Tencent’s cloud services both efficient and cost-effective. According to the company, the new model surpasses DeepSeek V3 in mathematical modeling, data analysis, and logical reasoning tasks.
The launch of Turbo S is part of an intense competition in China’s AI market. Following the release of DeepSeek R1 in January, Alibaba introduced Qwen 2.5-Max, while Baidu rolled out an upgraded Ernie platform. Tencent has now joined the race, aiming for a leading position. Investors believe the company will likely continue investing in cloud infrastructure and AI development, much like Alibaba.
The growing popularity of DeepSeek has led to a shortage of server capacity, prompting the company to lower API prices at night to optimize load distribution. Tencent and other players have also begun reducing the cost of their services to attract more clients. Amid this competition, the Chinese government has shown support for DeepSeek: its founder, Liang Wenfeng, was invited to a closed-door forum with top Chinese entrepreneurs.
The release of Hunyuan Turbo S underscores the escalating rivalry among China’s biggest tech firms. Tencent continues to expand its AI solutions, offering them to corporate clients through its cloud platforms and preparing for testing among select users. In the near future, the battle for dominance in the AI market is expected to intensify even further.
