Researchers found that this barrier deteriorates with age, allowing harmful molecules to penetrate the brain and trigger inflammation. Experiments in mice demonstrated that restoring the mucin layer through gene therapy reduced inflammation and improved cognitive functions such as learning and memory.
Mucins are large, carbohydrate-coated proteins that form a gel-like layer, safeguarding the blood-brain barrier. With age, their quantity and quality decline, making the barrier more permeable. Scientists discovered that increasing the activity of enzymes responsible for mucin production restores the barrier and enhances brain function in aging mice. This breakthrough could pave the way for new treatments for age-related diseases such as Alzheimer’s.
The study also raises questions about the role of mucins in other organs, such as the kidneys, which also experience age-related decline. Researchers suggest that mucins may not only filter substances but actively participate in their transport.
