Japanese chemists have developed an experimental reactor that converts solar energy and water into hydrogen fuel. The technology is based on a two-step photocatalyst system, which enables the sequential separation of hydrogen and oxygen without the need for additional purification using natural gas.
According to chemistry professor Kazunari Domen, the reactor has been operating successfully for three years, demonstrating the reliability of the technology. Photocatalysis accelerates chemical reactions using sunlight and catalysts such as titanium dioxide, making the process more efficient.
Despite its success, the method still requires further refinement before large-scale implementation. Scientists emphasize that improving system efficiency could make hydrogen fuel a more accessible and environmentally friendly energy source.
