Researchers have used lattice quantum chromodynamics (Lattice QCD) to study the internal forces within the proton—a fundamental particle whose structure remains a mystery. The proton consists of quarks bound together by the strong interaction, making its dynamics difficult to analyze. Using supercomputers, scientists simulated these processes by dividing space and time into a virtual lattice.
The results revealed an immense force inside the proton—up to 500,000 newtons, comparable to the weight of 10 elephants compressed into a volume smaller than an atomic nucleus. This is the most detailed insight yet into quark interactions within the proton, made possible through advanced computational methods.
The discovery promises breakthroughs in nuclear physics and medicine. For example, proton therapy for cancer treatment could become more precise by leveraging new insights into proton behavior based on its internal structure.
