The “Impossible” Becomes Reality: 10,000-Fold Boost in Quantum System Efficiency TECHNOLOGY

Scientists in the U.S. have achieved a major breakthrough in quantum communication systems by using an advanced nonlinear optical process based on indium gallium phosphide. This method is 10,000 times more efficient than previous technologies and solves one of the biggest challenges in quantum systems: insufficient light intensity. The new process is especially crucial for enabling quantum teleportation, which relies on quantum entanglement to transmit the state of particles with high resistance to external noise.

Until now, implementing quantum teleportation faced two main limitations: ambiguity when using linear optical components and noise generated during the creation of entangled photons. Conventional photon sources often produce extra photon pairs, making it difficult to verify genuine entanglement. Nonlinear optics addresses this issue using a process called sum-frequency generation (SFG), where two photons combine into one at a new frequency. This process had previously been extremely inefficient, but the new approach boosts the conversion success rate from 1 in 100 million to 1 in 10,000.

The newly developed system can now transmit quantum information with 94% accuracy — a huge leap from the theoretical maximum of 33% achievable with linear systems. According to Professor Kaijie Fang, this demonstrates the immense potential of nonlinear optics in quantum communications. While challenges like scalability and overall system efficiency remain, the results clearly highlight the promise of this technology.

At the same time, researchers in Austria and the UK have developed a new type of qubit based on quantum dots. They successfully created a collective quantum state suitable for storing and transmitting data across future quantum networks — a key step toward a full-scale quantum infrastructure.
