China Plans to Build an Electromagnetic Rocket Launch System TECHNOLOGY

China is developing an electromagnetic rocket launch system capable of deploying satellites into orbit with high speed and efficiency. The project is led by the private aerospace company Galactic Energy with support from state scientific institutes. The technology operates on principles similar to magnetic levitation trains, using superconducting magnets to accelerate rockets to supersonic speeds. The first launch site for electromagnetic launches is expected to be ready by 2028.

A test platform for the system is already under development in Sichuan Province, with strong backing from Chinese authorities. According to Li Ping, president of the Ziyang Institute of Commercial Space Launch Research, this technology could double payload capacity while reducing costs, making space launches more frequent and affordable. Founded in 2018, Galactic Energy has already conducted 18 successful launches and placed 77 satellites into orbit, positioning itself as a leader among China’s private space companies.

Beyond satellite launches, China is also exploring electromagnetic technology as a means of transporting lunar resources. Researchers propose using a “magnetic slingshot” to send cargo capsules without fuel, potentially making space resource extraction more cost-effective.
