Construction of the ambitious underwater complex Deep has begun in Gloucestershire, England, funded by an anonymous millionaire. By 2027, a former limestone quarry spanning 20 hectares will host residential modules, a training center, and a platform for mini-submarines. The modules are designed to descend up to 200 meters into the so-called “twilight zone” of the ocean.
Project participants will be able to stay underwater for up to 28 days, with plans to extend this duration in the future. The primary goal of Deep is to establish permanent underwater settlements worldwide. So far, the investor has poured over £100 million into the project.
Special attention is being given to underwater dining. Chef Joe Costa is developing dishes with bold flavors, as taste receptors weaken at great depths. Meals will be delivered in vacuum-sealed packaging to ensure freshness and preservation.
