Scientists from the University of Michigan have discovered that Earth’s magnetic north and south poles have flipped multiple times throughout the planet’s history. These events, known as geomagnetic excursions, are caused by shifts in Earth’s liquid outer core. One such event occurred around 42,000 years ago, during which the magnetic field weakened to just 10% of its current strength and the north magnetic pole drifted toward the equator.

Earth’s magnetic field plays a crucial role in shielding the planet from solar radiation and cosmic rays. When it weakens, the ozone layer can break down, leading to a surge in ultraviolet radiation that can significantly impact living organisms. Researcher Agnit Mukhopadhyay suggested that such changes may have contributed to the extinction of Neanderthals, while our ancestors adapted by using protective clothing and ochre—a natural pigment that shields the skin from the sun.

By analyzing magnetic signatures preserved in volcanic rocks and sediment layers, scientists have reconstructed the structure of Earth’s magnetic field during past pole shifts. Although it remains impossible to predict when the next shift will occur, its potential consequences could be devastating: satellite communication breakdowns, power grid failures, and entire regions becoming uninhabitable due to extreme ultraviolet exposure.
