NASA astronomers have unveiled enhanced nighttime images of Earth, created using data from the Suomi NPP satellite. This satellite is equipped with a highly sensitive radiometer capable of detecting even the faintest light sources, including city lights and reflections.
To produce accurate maps of urban illumination, researchers removed extraneous noise, such as reflected moonlight and auroras, and combined the cleaned data with Earth’s photographs. This approach resulted in sharp and highly informative visualizations.
These images help identify the most developed and densely populated regions of the planet, as well as uninhabited areas. They serve as a “light map” of the modern world, reflecting the levels of urbanization and population density.
