Saudi Arabia has launched the world’s longest automated metro network in Riyadh, spanning 176 kilometers and featuring 85 stations. This cutting-edge system is set to redefine urban transit, easing traffic congestion and cutting CO₂ emissions by an estimated 10.8 million tons annually. Three lines became operational on December 1, with a fourth to follow in January and the remaining two lines debuting later. Once fully functional, the metro will accommodate up to 3.6 million passengers daily, seamlessly connecting business districts, residential hubs, and cultural landmarks.
A highlight of the project is the King Abdullah Financial District (KAFD) station, a masterpiece by Zaha Hadid Architects. Its curved lattice design not only shields passengers from Riyadh’s intense heat but also offers an intuitive layout for effortless navigation.
The metro features fully electric, driverless trains, including Alstom Metropolis and Innovia Metro models, offering three classes of service: first class, family, and single passenger. These trains boast modern amenities such as ergonomic seating, LED lighting, air conditioning, and digital displays. An advanced automated control system ensures precise speed regulation, seamless door operations, and optimal passenger safety. Stations are equipped with platform screen doors and real-time updates via digital screens and speakers, enhancing convenience and security.
The Riyadh Metro sets a global benchmark for sustainable public transit and is a cornerstone of Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 modernization agenda.
