The True Size of the Sun

The True Size of the Sun SPACE

The Sun, the central star of our system, boasts an impressive diameter of 1,392,000 kilometers (about 865,000 miles), making it 109 times wider than Earth. This immense size underscores its dominant role in the Solar System, where it accounts for approximately 99.8% of the total mass.

The Sun’s surface temperature reaches about 10,000 degrees Fahrenheit (around 5,500 degrees Celsius), while its core burns at an astonishing 27 million degrees Fahrenheit. These extreme conditions drive nuclear fusion reactions, releasing vast amounts of energy in the form of light and heat.

At the core of the Sun, hydrogen fuses into helium, generating tremendous energy. This energy slowly moves outward before escaping the Sun as light and heat, which take roughly 8 minutes to travel to Earth.

With its unique characteristics, the Sun remains a key focus for astrophysicists. Studying it enhances our understanding of star formation, stellar evolution, and potential threats the Sun might pose to life on Earth.
